Thank you to all who came to Dunn and Brown Contemporary last Friday and Saturday and shopped your hearts out at 5×7. We sold 286 5x7s – a record for any On The Road event. Recession? What recession? Especially exciting to see were children with their parents, picking out work for their very own fledgling art collections.
As you can see, the crowd was large and VERY focused on pulling those tags. (click on the image to see the full Flickr set)
August 28 & 29, 5×7 On The Road travels to Houston’s Inman Gallery – we hope to see you there!
August 14 & 15, 5×7 heads to Dallas’ Dunn and Brown Contemporary. The event on Friday is from 5 – 7pm, with the sale beginning at 5:30. Speaking from experience, get there early – Dallas folks LOVE to shop. Then come back on Saturday to look again, and pick up another piece (or pieces). As always each 5×7 is $100, and all proceeds support Arthouse’s FREE exhibitions and educational programs.
A number of artists have made new work especially for Dallas, including Annette Lawrence, Gary Panter, Vernon Fisher, Brian Fridge, Julie Bozzi and Nic Nicosia.

Michael Smith, "Excuse me..." watercolor on rag board
MICHAEL SMITH received his B.A. from The Colorado College and attended The Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York City. Smith has taught at numerous art schools and universities including University of California at Los Angeles, California Institute of the Arts, Cranbrook, Art Center, University of Illinois at Chicago, The Royal Danish Academy, Pratt Institute, and Yale University. He has exhibited extensively around the US, Canada and Europe at a variety of venues from museums and galleries to nightclubs and television. His works are in the permanent collections of The Walker Art Center, the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Museum of Radio and Television in New York City. Since 1997 he has collaborated with Joshua White on several large-scale installations that were shown at The New Museum and the Christine Burgin Gallery in New York City, The Vienna Kunsthalle, Art Metropole in Toronto, the Hales Galley in London and at the Basel Art Fair. In addition to his collaborative work with Joshua White, Smith has had recent solo exhibitions at Dunn and Brown Contemporary in Dallas, Galleria Emi Fontana in Milan and at Ellen de Bruijn Projects in Amsterdam.

Dario Robleto, "The Mourn-Full," colored pencil and marker on paper
DARIO ROBLETO received a BFA from The University of Texas at San Antonio. In 2008, Alloy of Love, a ten-year survey exhibition of Robleto’s work was organized by the Frye Museum of Art, Seattle, WA and the Francis Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY. Recent solo exhibitions include Those Mirrors with Memory, Inman Gallery, Houston; Fear and Tenderness in Men, D’Amelio Terras, New York; and Chrysanthemum Anthems, Weatherspoon Art Museum, University of North Carolina, Greensboro (traveled to the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT and Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, TN). Robleto was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial. Robleto was invited by Arthouse to consider and contact an artist with whom he wished to show his work, resulting in the 2006 exhibition The Gospel of Lead: Dario Robleto and Jeremy Blake.

Artist statement:
My life’s work is to reintroduce classical and realist painting in contemporary art and discourse. As a classicist, many of my works have been allegorical, symbols for abstract ideas. As a modernist, these abstract ideas also pay tribute to contemporary events such as the tragedy of September 11th, 2001 and the international AIDS crisis. Freedom Red is my latest art project and White Roses is my first production under this heading. That is, it is the first work of a collective allegory. Alone, it reminds us that life is both beautiful and dynamic. But added to future works, it and they will show us that we still have great, almost insurmountable challenges ahead. In particular, we do not have a cure for HIV/AIDS. Until we do, I will continue to paint for Freedom Red and donate a percentage of each work to HIV/ AIDS charities and others that nurture life, assist the needy and work for equality.

Robyn O'Neil, "Man, Rückenfigur," graphite on rag board
ROBYN O’NEIL received her B.F.A. from Texas A&M, Commerce and her M.F.A. from the University of Illinois, Chicago. She currently lives and works in Houston, Texas. In 2006, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, Texas organized the artist’s first one-person museum survey which traveled to the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, and the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, Washington. O’Neil has been included in many prestigious group museum exhibitions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, as well as the 2004 Whitney Biennial. She has been featured in Vitamin D, a survey of contemporary drawings published by Phaidon Press. In 1999, she was awarded the DeGolyer Grant by the Dallas Museum of Art, and in 2005, she received an Artadia Grant from the Artadia Foundation – The Fund for Art and Dialogue in New York City. O’Neil was a finalist for the 2005 Arthouse Texas Prize and is the recipient of the 2009 Hunting Prize. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. O’Neil is represented by Dunn and Brown Contemporary in Dallas.

Melissa Miller, "Octopus with Fish," watercolor on paper
MELISSA MILLER received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of New Mexico in 1974. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin and has been a visiting lecturer and guest artist at over twenty universities, colleges, and art institutes. She is widely known for her expressionistic paintings that use animals as metaphors for human situations and dilemmas. Miller has exhibited work at many of the major museums in America. These include the Hirshhorn and Corcoran Museums in Washington D.C.; the Brooklyn Museum ; the New Orleans Museum of Art; the Baltimore Museum of Art; and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Her work has been included in the prestigious Whitney Biennial and the Venice Biennial. The artist is the recipient of three individual Artist Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her works can be found in many public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; and the Contemporary Museum, Honolulu. Her work is currently represented by Moody Gallery in Houston, and Dunn and Brown Contemporary in Dallas, Texas.
